Zombies are corpses of creatures animated by necromantic magic drawing on the plane of Mabar.[4]. Virtually any creature can become a zombie, including beholders, dragons, humanoids, ogres, and purple worms.[1][5]

Since zombies are one of most basic forms of undead, they often can be found where ever there are those who dabble in necromancy, including dragon necromancers, the Skullborn of Aerenal, the Order of the Emerald Claw, and followers of the Blood of Vol.[5][6][7] Corpses slain in Mabaran manifest zones, such as the Shanjueed Jungle in Sarlona, also have a chance to spontaneously arise as a zombie.[8]

Some faiths and organizations, such as the Church of the Silver Flame and the Undying Court of Aerenal, consider zombies evil creatures whose animation is an insult to the dead and seek to destroy zombies when they are found.[9] Necromancy is also forbidden by Argonnessen's Conclave.[5] However, Seekers of the Blood of Vol have no such taboos, and see animating zombies as a way of allowing the deceased to continue to serve their community.[7]

Description

Zombies are animated corpses of creatures, and as such are often decaying and emit the stench of rotting flesh. If the zombie was killed violently, the wounds that caused its death remain.[1]

Abilities

Zombies are animated corpses, but keep none of the original creature's intelligence. Instead their intelligence is limited to following simple orders and distinguishing between friend and foe. Zombies do not require any sustenance, and don't breathe or sleep.[1]

History

During the Last War, the nation of Karrnath began to use undead, including zombies, in its armies after a famine in the early years of the war. However, the need for constant oversight over armies of zombies and skeletons led Karrnath to create a new type of undead in cooperation with Blood of Vol necromancers. These new Karrnathi undead soldiers were more intelligent and could obey complex orders independently.[10][11][12]

Around 50 years ago, a criminal gang in Stormreach called the Shrouds emerged. Members of the Shrouds mutilate themselves to appear as rotting corpses, but are also often accompanied by real zombies.[13]
