Zarash'ak, also called the City of Stilts, is a small city in the Shadow Marches. It is the unofficial capital of the region and its largest settlement. It is managed by House Tharashk and is the seat of their power. The clans and tribes of the Shadow Marches come to Zarash'ak for trade and gather there for religious rituals, such as the Great Feast of Baaldra (Boldrei). For outsiders, Zarash'ak is the gateway to travel or trade in the Shadow Marches.[1][2]

Geography[]

ShadowMarches

The Shadow Marches, including Zarash'ak

Zarash'ak lies along the Glum River in the middle of the Shadow Marches, about 100 miles inland of the Zarash Bay.[3][4]

Trade[]

Zarash'ak is the primary port for goods to travel into or out of the Shadow Marches, primarily dragonshards and herbs. Goods travel by ferry and barge to Zarash Bay, where they are loaded onto ships to be exported to the rest of Khorvaire. In recent years goods can also be transported via airship, thanks to a House Lyrandar docking tower in the city.[4]

Zarash'ak has some trade beyond Khorvaire. House Tharashk prospectors regularly travel between Zarash'ak and Stormreach in Xen'drik.[5] Occasionally smugglers use Zarash'ak as a starting point for trips across the Barren Sea to the Tashana Tundra in Sarlona.[6] Riedra also has a small outpost in the city.[4]

History[]

Travellers approach Zarash'ak

Zarash'ak was built by a collaboration of all three clans of House Tharashk shortly after their rise to prominence. The House desired to build a port city that could ship mined and processed dragonshards to buyers across Khorvaire. A suitable location couldn't be found on Zarash Bay, so House Tharashk decided to build the port up the Glum River from the bay instead. The city was built over the course of ten years, most of it spent building raised platforms on stilts and trees to keep the city above water.[4]

Inhabitants[]

The majority of inhabitants are humans, half-orcs, and orcs.[4]
