Woodlings are plant-like creatures that retain the form of their base species but gain plant traits, including seasonal changes in appearance and abilities tied to nature. They are peaceful, guardians of natural environments, with a vulnerability to fire and immunity to various harmful effects, making them powerful protectors of forests and jungles.

Description[]

Woodlings are plant-like creatures that have bonded deeply with nature, becoming an extension of the natural world itself. These creatures share a similar mindset to treants, feeling at peace and one with nature. While they retain the physical form of their base creature—whether that be a dragon, humanoid, or magical beast—woodlings gain fully developed plant traits. Their appearance reflects the changing seasons, with skin and hair resembling bark and leaves that shift in color from light green in spring, to dark green in summer, to yellow, orange, or red in autumn, and dry brown in winter. These traits make them highly integrated into the environments they inhabit, often making them difficult to spot in the wild, though they have a vulnerability to fire.[1]

The woodling lizard is a plant-infused variant of a lizard, blending its natural form with plant-like traits such as bark-like skin and leaf-like features. It is a peaceful creature, native to jungles and forests of Valenar, with seasonal changes in appearance and a deep connection to nature.[1]

Behavior & Personality[]

Woodlings, like their treant cousins, are at peace with themselves and the natural world. They share a deep connection with the land they protect, often taking on guardianship roles over forests or jungles. Woodlings are typically calm and deliberate but can be fiercely protective when their domain is threatened. They are not aggressive by nature but will defend their environment against any who would harm it.[1]

In societies where they coexist with other creatures, such as the elves of Aerenal or the Feryk halflings of Xen'drik, woodlings can be allies or respected beings, though they may also be seen as somewhat aloof or distant from more traditional humanoid cultures.[1]

Combat[]

Woodlings retain the base creature's natural attacks and abilities, but they gain a powerful slam attack and may also use their natural weapons if they have any. In combat, they use their innate connection to nature, relying on abilities such as entangling foes or summoning nature's allies to assist them in battle. Some also have access to spell-like abilities that enhance their natural environment manipulation, including summon nature’s ally, speak with plants, and command plants. Woodlings are resistant to slashing damage and are immune to mind-affecting effects and abilities. However, woodlings are vulnerable to fire, which causes them to take more damage than normal from fire-based attacks.[1]

Ecology[]

Woodlings can be found in any natural environment above ground, particularly in forests, jungles, and other lush, thriving ecosystems. They are well-suited to places that are untouched by heavy industry or destructive forces. In the wild, they act as guardians, protecting their habitat from those who would exploit it. They have a strong relationship with other creatures of the forest, including treants, fey, and many types of animals, often taking on roles that maintain the balance of their ecosystems.[1]

History[]

Woodlings are ancient creatures, their origins tied to the primal forces of nature.[1] They are among the inhabitants of Lamannia, the Twilight Forest.[2]

They are found across Khorvaire and Aerenal, and some even inhabit the jungles of Xen'drik.[1] Woodling jaguars are known to reside in the King's Forest of Breland.[3]

The woodlings of Xen'drik, known as the Feryk, once traded with outside visitors but have become increasingly savage and feral after a plague corrupted the Viridian Grove, a group of ancient treants they revered.[1]

In Aerenal, woodlings are sometimes kept as pets, such as woodling apes and baboons, while in Valenar, elves hunt woodling lizards for sport.[1]
