Count Vedim ir'Omik is the Minister of the Dead and a member of the royal family of Karrnath. He is also a necromancer who is fascinated with undeath.[1][2][3]

Count Vedim is a royal cousin of King Kaius ir'Wynarn III.[1]
Personality[]
He chafes at his loss of station in peacetime.[1] Vedim misses the time during the Last War when he was able to walk openly through court and draw glances of fear, respect, and loathing from his noble peers.[4]
Vedim does not believe the war has truly ended.[4] In spite of Kaius's desire for peace, Vedim believes that the peace will break, and that his time will come again.[1]

Vedim resides in Korth, where his main laboratory is located.[4]
Activities[]
As Minister of the Dead, Vedim oversees the creation and maintenance of Karrnath's undead armies. This includes employing royal corpse collectors to claim bodies from morgues to be turned into undead.[1]
Vedim maintains secret laboratories across the Karrnath countryside to create new types of undead to guard the borders of Karrnath, or even expand those borders if possible.[4]
Vedim's ambitions do not stop here, however. Vedim has carefully experimented in creating new forms of undead in what he calls his "necrogenesis" program. He has created two new forms of undead: the urdarks and vours. To avoid being made a victim as the Blood of Vol was, he maintains careful control over his creations through arcane passphrases.[4] Despite powerful wards of binding to control these new types of undead, a few have broken free imto the Karrnathi countryside. These include urdarks, including the spirit of the first urdark, Arven Urdark; Vedim blames Arven Urdark's spirit for reported mass insanity in some corners of the country. Vours have been encountered near Korth, and some were even spotted in the Mournland and the Talenta Plains.[5]
Vedim's necromancers are also field testing wights and vampire spawn beyond Karrnath's borders. The corpse collectors are collecting bodies from bloodlines to reanimate them into greater forms of undead.[2]
Vedim has ordered more Karrnathi undead be added to the army of Karrnathi undead within the secret vaults.[6] The bodies of the dead are taken from Vedykar and Vulyar to supply additional bodies for undead soldiers in secret in Fort Zombie and Fort Bone.[3]
History[]
Vedim formerly held the rank of General during the Last War. In 980 YK, he led a force of living and undead Karrnathi legions across the Scions Sound to besiege Angwar Keep in Thrane. After a year of the unsuccessful siege, Count Vedim declared victory and sailed back to Korth.[7]

In Eberron Campaign Guide, Vedim is listed as one of the three people (the others including Etrigani, and Moranna) who know that Kaius III is secretly the vampire Kaius I taking the place of his great grandson. Since Kaius III's fate is kept ambiguous in Rising from the Last War, this information is currently omitted from the main article.
