Unaligned is an alignment of sorts, but more accurately describes a complete lack of alignment. This is usually due to a lack of sapience - animals and many constructs are unaligned, rather than True Neutral , because they lack the higher thought required to comprehend alignment or morality. In D&D's 4th edition, when the alignment system was greatly simplified, all neutral alignments were merged under the name "unaligned", which meant that several gods of neutral alignments, like the Traveller (normally chaotic neutral) were described as Unaligned during this edition.[1] This change was reversed for D&D's 5th edition.
