Thrym hounds are massive wolf-like magical beasts from icy regions.[1]
Description[]
Thrym hounds are huge, wolf-like creatures, standing 12 feet (3.7 meters) tall at the shoulder and stretching 30 feet (9.1 meters) in length, including their tails. Their bodies are covered in icy stone spikes instead of fur, and their glowing white eyes make them look even more fearsome. These creatures can weigh up to 15 tons (14,000,000 g).[1]
Behavior[]
Thrym hounds are clever and cruel hunters. They often enjoy playing with their prey by chasing and tormenting it before delivering the killing blow.[1]
They are either lone hunters or dwell in large, feral packs. They respect each other's territory, avoiding unnecessary conflicts with other Thrym hounds.[1]
Combat[]
Thrym hounds are fearsome fighters that combine their incred+ible strength with icy magic. They strike with their sharp claws, powerful jaws, and freezing blasts of energy from its frigid star. They can summon hailstorms to disorient enemies and lash out with icy spikes if attacked at close range. Thrym hounds are smart in battle, targeting the most dangerous foes first and using their abilities to control the fight.[1]
Ecology[]
Thrym hounds live in arctic and subarctic regions, preferring icy caves they dig out themselves. They eat massive meals when food is available and can then go for nearly a year without eating. They fear few creatures, and packs can even compete with young dragons, though they fear and avoid white dragons. Thrym hounds are most active in their snowy habitats, but they occasionally venture into warmer regions to hunt or raid.[1]
Thrym hounds are native to the Frostfell, but over time have spread to the Lhazaar Principalities, the Mror Holds, the Demon Wastes north of Eldeen Bay, and the Tashana Tundra. In Karrnath, these creatures are feared and known for their raids on villages and livestock, but they are mere legend elsewhere in Khorvaire.[1]
Usage[]
They are used by frost giants as mounts and guardians.[1]
Rumors & Legends[]
Many believe Thrym hounds were a gift to frost giants from their god Thrym long ago.[1]
Their name originates from a fabled island in the Frostfell believed to have once been home to a giant kingdom before Xen'drik's fall.[1]
