The Sundering, or the Sundering of Sarlona, is an extended conflict that culminated in the rise of Riedra from the ashes of the Twelve Kingdoms.
Description[]
The Sundering was a five-hundred-year period in the history of Sarlona where wars between the states known as the Twelve Kingdoms threatened to engulf all of Sarlona.[1]
Outcome[]
It concluded with the unification of most of Sarlona under the Unity of Riedra.[1]
Many residents of the continent escaped from Sarlona to avoid this upheaval, to lands including Adar, Khorvaire, and Xen'drik.[1] Humans from Ohr Kaluun settled in western Khorvaire after crossing the Barren Sea. Some settled in the Shadow Marches and mixed with the native orcs to give rise to the Jhor'guntaal (half-orcs), while others formed the Carrion Tribes of the Demon Wastes.[2] Tieflings from Ohr Kaluun settled in the Venomous Demesne.[3] The doppelgangers of Lost claim to have fled slavery in Ohr Kaluun and the Sundering.[4] The yuan-ti began their long migration by fleeing their homeland in Syrkarn to first settle in Argonnessen, before the worst of them were cast out to flee to Xen'drik.[1][5]
History[]
The Sundering first began 1,500 years ago, when the birth of the first kalashtar of Adar turned the gaze of the quori of the Dreaming Dark to Sarlona. The conflict of the dream entities of Dal Quor bled into the waking world of Eberron.[1]
The Twelve Kingdoms that inhabited the lands of what are now modern-day Riedra and Syrkarn—Borunan, Corvagura, Dor Maleer, Khalesh, Khunan, Lamecha, Mae Khree, Nulakesh, Ohr Kaluun, Pyrine, Rhiavhaar, and Sunyagir—warred amongst each other for two hundred years.[1]
The conflict between Khunan, Lamecha, Mae Khree, and Sunyagir was one of the first of the Sundering. These "magewars" between the four nations gave rise to the yuan-ti and the nation of Syrkarn. This might have been related to the release of an Overlord bound beneath the city of Sustrai Mor that gives the land its modern name, Syrkarn.[1]
Rise of the Inspired[]
After two hundred years of conflict, the quori completed their manipulation to create the first of the Chosen.[1] The quori made use of careful manipulation of scapegoat forces such as the yuan-ti, shulassakar, and ogre mages within the Twelve Kingdoms to unify most of the continent under their rule. These Inspired representatives of higher powers stepped in and began the process of unifying eight of the kingdoms under a single faith and flag, that of the Path of Inspiration and the Unity of Riedra.[1]
The ending of the Sundering was heralded as the start of the Age of Unity.[1] This 1,000-year period continues to the present day, where Riedra dominates the continent of Sarlona and shapes the populace on behalf of their quori masters.[1][6]
