The Gloaming is the darkest part of the Towering Wood in the Eldeen Reaches.[3] The region is a manifest zone of Mabar, the Endless Night. Here the beauty and splendor of the forest changes to parasite-infested malformed trees, concealing monstrous insects and undead creatures who prey on lost travelers.[1][2][3]
The Gloaming is a holy site for the Children of Winter.[1]
Geography[]
The Gloaming is located in the southern parts of the Towering Wood in the Eldeen Reaches. The region is about 15 mi (24,000 m), and is separated into three 5 mi (8,000 m) rings marking the border in which the manifest zone grows stronger towards the center.[1]
History[]
Over the past century, the Gloaming has been slowly expanding.[1] The Children of Winter druidic sect used to dwell in the Gloaming studying this expansion. However, since the Day of Mourning, most have left the Gloaming to travel throughout Khorvaire.[4][5]
Rumors & Legends[]
Individuals believe the Gloaming is the result of the influence of the daelkyr, though the Children of Winter claim it is a sign of what is to come.[1] Scholars have even suggested the Gloaming as one of the possible origins for the disease of lycanthropy.[6]
The Children of Winter speak of a serpent of legacy infused with the power of the Gloaming named Coldfang.[7]
The Ashbound base their belief in the crime of seeking immortality through the pursuit of magic off of the legend of the high druid Breakwinter, who both summoned fiends, animated undead, and became a lich to better combat the influence of the Gloaming and the Children of Winter.[8]
Notable Locations[]
- Nytarch's Cave[9]
Inhabitants[]
Though the Children of Winter have largely abandoned the region, some have recently returned to the southern part of the nearby forest.[2] Many packs of the Children of Winter patrol the borders of the Gloaming to keep out intruders.[9]
Members of the Ashbound druid sect frequently navigate the borders of the Gloaming, and come into conflict with the Children of Winter who patrol the boundaries of the manifest zone.[10]
The Nightbringers, a breakaway cult of rogue Children of Winter, reside deep within the inner ring of the Gloaming and study the influence of Mabar.[9][11]
Undead and other sinister creatures lurk in the shadows of the Gloaming.[3]
Flora & Fauna[]
The Gloaming is filled with misshapen trees, parasites, disease, and horrid insects such as monstrous beetes, spiders, and centipedes.[2] The Gloaming contains deadly plants, vermin, and swarms of insects possessing an unnatural intelligence.[1]
