Syrkarn is a southern region on the continent of Sarlona. It is a mostly agrarian society made up of ogres, eneko ("mongrel ogres"), half-giants, and humans.[2]
Government[]
Syrkarn lies directly south of the Inspired-ruled nation of Riedra, which claims Sykarn as a protectorate, but the region is effectively independent. Instead governance of the region is divided among individual nomadic tribes and settlements, each with their own leaders, known as sahars.[3]
Geography[]
Sykarn is located in the south-central part of Riedra, bordering the Unity of Riedra to the north, the mountains of Adar to the southeast, and the Sea of Rage to the west.[3][4]
Sykarn's terrain is largely arid steppes, deserts, and savannahs, occasionally broken up by hills and mountains. Like the rest of Sarlona, the region is affected by wild manifest zones and planar storms.[2][5]
History[]
Scholars theorize that during the Age of Demons an Overlord was bound in Syrkarn.[2][6]
Ancient Syrkarn was composed of four nations: Mae-Khree, Sunyagir, Khunan, and Lamecha. Khunan was the most powerful of these, ruled by wizards. Mae-Khree, known for its horses; Sunyagir, known for its mining; and Lamecha, known for its agriculture, were independent but satellite states. However, when the nation of Khunan attempted to conquer Lamecha, the other three nations united against Khunan in a devastating war that destroyed Khunan, and forced its people to flee. This conflict was one of the first conflicts of the Sundering, a two-hundred-year period of conflict that ended with the unification of Sarlona under the Unity of Riedra.[7]
With Syrkarn ruined by war, new creatures and peoples emerged to settle in the abandoned lands, including ogres, half-giants, and yuan-ti.[7] However the yuan-ti were used by the Inspired as a common enemy to help unite Riedra, which resulted in the yuan-ti's extermination. Despite this victory, in −212 YK, 90 years after the creation of Riedra, the Inspired ordered thousands of humans to leave Syrkarn and resettle elsewhere in Riedra.[8] It is speculated that the destruction of Khunan, the rise of the yuan-ti, and the subsequent evacuation by Riedra were related to Syrkarn's bound Overlord being partially released and rebound.[2][6] For the last 1200 years Syrkarn has nominally been under Riedran control, and monitored by their agents, but has been effectively independent.
