Sphinxes are creatures with the bodies of lions, feathery wings, and human-like heads. Although they are a rare sight in Khorvaire, they have been spotted in the Talenta Plains and on the continents of Argonnessen and Xen'drik.[3][4][5][6][7]
Description[]
All sphinxes have leonine bodies with great feathery wings.[3]
Types of Sphinxes[]
There are various different types of sphinxes:
- Androsphinx: Androsphinxes are always male and are the most common of the species of sphinx. They have razor-sharp claws, and a gruff demeanor.[1]
- Criosphines: Criosphinxes are always male, but these sphinxes are less intelligent than the other species of sphinxes. These sphinxes use their horns to attack, as well as their claws.[3]
- Gynosphinxes: Gynosphinxes are always females, and are the female counterpart to the androsphinxes. They constantly seek out new intellectual challenges.[1]
- Hieracosphinxes: Hieracosphinxes are always male, and are always evil. They enjoy ripping creatures to shreds more than challenging them with puzzles.[3]
- Loquasphinxes: Loquasphinxes can be male or female. They speak with truename magic, using it to find the truth from their targets.[6]
Society[]
Sphinxes tend to be very solitary creatures and are territorial.[3] Many make their lairs within the ruins of ancient civilizations or in isolated caves.[2]
Language[]
Sphinxes speak their own language as well as Common and Draconic.[3]
Notable Sphinxes[]
- Flamewind, a gynosphinx with amazing oracular powers. Found in Xen'drik in 996 YK, Flamewind resides at Morgrave University in Sharn, where she spends her time in the university's library in trade for her visions of things to come.[5][8][9]
- Maris-kossja, gynosphinx matriarch of a clan of sphinxes in service to the dragon Zenobaal. She leads her clan of half-dragon gynosphinxes called the Daughters of Propheecy, along with a harem of criosphinx and hieracosphinx brutes.[4]
- Stheravimalquataram, A loquasphinx who has formed an allegiance with the Ghatharon tribe of halflings in the Talenta Plains.[6]
