Spelleaters are a kind of massive, four-legged dragon creature with a dreadful maw extending out from its torso with an instinctive hunger for magic and the ability to devour spells used against them.
Description[]
The spelleater is a draconic creation created in the distant past to consume magic and spellcasters. They vaguely resemble massive armored dinosaurs, but are cunning and intelligent. Spelleaters can consume magic directed at them, and use it to fuel strange powers of their own.[1]
History[]
Scholars think that during the Age of Demons the dragons created spelleaters as a means to combat spellcasting enemies. Afterwards, the spelleaters moved to Argonnessen or to areas of the Frostfell northwest of the Demon Wastes.[1]
Society[]
Spelleaters consider themselves to be dragons, though true dragons disagree, and engage in competition with one another for dominance.
Spelleaters are extremely rare, and dwell in family units of six to ten. Spelleaters are xenophobic, and protective of their family against others.[1]
Spelleaters hide from the affairs of humanoids by avoiding civilization to not fall prey to their consuming hunger for magic or be destroyed themselves. Spelleaters hoard magic items to slowly devour, and as a way to avoid succumbing to their hunger and going after spellcasters.[1]
Abilities[]
Spelleaters are large physical powerhouses with a mighty bite. Surprisingly intelligent, they can detect magic at will, and can devour spells that target them that do not overcome their spell resistance. A spelleater converts the energy of the spell to either get a temporary boost in combat ability, become hardier in battle, gain fast healing, or make spellcasting more difficult in a 50 ft (15 m) radius surrounding them.[1]
Lands[]
Spelleaters dwell in cool, moist areas such as frostfell forests or grasslands. They can survive in most environments, but regress in arid and hot climates such as desert to a bestial state, and they try to seek out more comfortable locations quickly.[1]
Spelleaters dwell in Argonnessen and areas of the Frostwell to the northwest of the Demon Wastes.[1]
