Skeletons are a common type of undead, usually the result of bones of a corpse being animated by necromantic magic drawing on energy from the plane of Mabar.[1][4]

Skeletons are a basic form of undead, and so can be found across Eberron, but are particularly associated with the nation of Karrnath, who used skeletons, zombies, and other undead in its military during the Last War.[5][6][7] While most of Karrnath's undead armies are locked away in vaults, they still use skeletons in military capacities as border guards and to man forts like Fort Bones, as well as skeletal steeds as tireless undead mounts.[8][9][10]

Description[]

Skeletons resemble the bones they are created out off. They are generally made of the remains of humanoid skeletons, but any creature that leaves behind bones on death can be turned into an undead skeleton.[1] Dragon skeletons can be found on the continent of Argonnessen, and giant skeletons guard ancient ruins in Xen'drik.[11][12][13]

Skeletons generally have limited sentience, allowing it to follow basic orders of its master and find ways around an obstacle. However they generally lack the ability to speak and lack any skills the corpse they were made from knew in life.[1] Some other types of undead made from bones are more intelligent, such as Karrnathi undead soldiers.[14]

Organizations[]

The Order of the Emerald Claw uses many types of undead, including skeletons, in military and terror operations to further their agenda.[5]

Followers of the Blood of Vol faith have a pragmatic approach to undead, seeing animating skeletons as a way of gaining use out of a corpse once the person has deceased and no longer needs it.[15]

The creation of skeletons is opposed by a number of organizations, including the elves of Aerenal, who see them as an affront to the deceased.[16]
