A shroud of death and despair is a deadly type of living spell arising from a combination of a crushing despair spell and a finger of death spell.[1]

Description[]

It appears as a cloud some 15 feet (4.6 meters) wide and resembling a gigantic amoeba with long misty tendrils, all composed of black energy and hovering just off the ground.[1]

Behavior[]

Though mindless, it is tireless and meticulous in its hunt for signs of life to blot out.[1]

Tactics[]

Like other living spells, the shroud of death and despair tries to engulf its prey but it can also slam them from up to 10 feet (3 meters) away with its tendrils. Either way, they are subject to both the crushing despair that weakens them and the finger of death that can kill them outright.[1]

Abilities[]

The crushing despair spell causes a victim to be overwhelmed with intense sadness unless they have the great willpower to resist. If not, they are hampered in many areas for thirteen minutes at least.[1]

In any case, the finger of death spell simply slays a victim outright unless they have great fortitude and vitality to resist. Even if they do shake it off, they are seriously harmed.[1]

As normal for living spells, a shroud of death and despair can move over and envelop smaller creatures, grabbing hold of them and even carrying them along unless they escape.[1]

Like all living spells, a shroud of death and despair has blindsight to 60 feet (18 meters); is immune to gazes, mind-affecting spells and abilities, poison, magical sleep, paralysis, polymorphing, and stunning; is not vulnerable to flanking maneuvers nor serious injuries; and has resistances to damage from non-magical weapons and spells.[1]
