The Sharn Inquisitive, or simply the Inquisitive, is a local chronicle published in Sharn, and one of the more ambitious chronicles of Khorvaire.[3][1][2][4]
Staff[]
The Sharn Inquisitive is currently published by Haftak ir'Clarn, whose offices are in the University District of Upper Menthis.[5][6] Haftak also owns and runs Haftak's Books and Binding, and makes use of its facilities to print the Sharn Inquisitive.[7] Lord Aehion Hanius Hayttear is a minor shareholder.[8]
Haftak frequently hires adventurers to deliver exciting tales for printing in the chronicle, so it's a good source of work in Sharn, at least for those who don't mind taking a risk.[5][6]
Content[]
Considered mainstream, the Breland Ledger usually gives fair and balanced coverage of affairs, if slightly slanted in favor of Breland.[9] For local news, the Inquisitive is the first choice of many in Sharn, though critics describe it as little more than idle gossip. The Inquisitive also features opinion pages, where important local matters are debated, often heatedly. Meanwhile, most educated folk who want real news from outside Sharn depend on the Korranberg Chronicle.[1][2] The Brelish love for gossip sees the Sharn Inquisitive enjoy a strong readership across Breland, but people of other nations view it as light and trivial.[10]
Haftak's distant cousin, Lord Ruken ir'Clarn, is a member of the Breland Parliament who is known for his radical politics and opposition to King Boranel ir'Wynarn, and this Haftak's views are much debated. This family connection has led to some critics claiming that the Sharn Inquisitive is biased against the Brelish crown, while others insist it is overly supportive.[1][2]
Quotes from the anonymous street bard known as Beggar Dane are also printed in the Inquisitive and have become well known to the Brelish. These simple life lessons include such wisdom as "A copper piece in the cup is a copper piece earned," "Never borrow, never lend," "The silent man has no one to blame but himself," and "A magewright in the town is worth an army in the wilderness."[10]
Availability[]
It is printed once per week on Sul and distributed through the city mail. The chronicle must be purchased via a subscription with a yearly cost of 3 gp; issues are not normally sold individually. However, it is easy to come across discarded copies a few days following their publication.[1][2]
Description[]
Like other chronicles of its kind, each edition comprises a set of broadsheets folded and nested together like a simple book. These are collected, stored, and eventually bound together.[3][4]
History[]
A minor member of the ir'Clarn noble family of Sharn, Haftak ir'Clarn made use of a sizeable personal fortune, and his better-known cousin Lord Ruken ir'Clarn, to start the Sharn Inquisitive. However, it was but a sideline to supplement his barely profitable bookstore and binding business.[7]
The Sharn Inquisitive once published a series of articles about how, at the Library of Korranberg, King Boranel met and fell in love with Lady Chaseva ir'Maasat of Cyre, whom he later married. These helped sway public opinion from outrage at a perceived betrayal of his nation to charmed fascination at a royal romance that crossed hostile borders.[11]
