Oni, also known as ogre mages, are large powerful creatures with innate magical abilities.[1] Most ogre mages in Eberron live in Sarlona, but some can also be found in Droaam.[4][5]

Description[]

Oni resemble more demonic versions of their ogre cousins in size and form. Their skin tends to be blue or green, and their teeth and claws tend to be black in color. Oni have a pair of white horns protruding from their forehead.[1]

Abilities[]

Oni have the ability to change their form to resemble other giants or shrink to take on the appearance of smaller humanoids such as humans or halflings. They also have innate spellcasting abilities.[1]

History[]

Oni originated on the continent of Sarlona, in the region known as Borunan, alongside their ogre cousins. Oni warlords dominated the region, and engaged in internal power struggles instead of attacking the neighboring human kingdoms. However, towards the end of the Sundering, the Inspired united the human nations in an offensive against the Borunan oni and ogres. Borunan was brought into the Unity of Riedra and the Inspired sought to indoctrinate or exterminate the oni. A few ogres and oni fled into Syrkarn, where they would mix with the local half-giants to create the eneko.[4][6]

Today, Riedra employs oni mainly as fighters in its military, or as overseers for ogres.[7]

In Droaam, oni often have leadership roles because of their power and intelligence.[8]

Beliefs[]

Riedran oni are taught from a young age that their magical abilities and fiendish appearance is the result of them being a prison for an altavar, an evil spirit in opposition to the Path of Inspiration. Oni who dedicate their lives in service to Riedra and the Inspired are believed to be able to redeem the altavar within them, allowing them to advance in their next life.[4][7] Oni are further taught not to use their ability to change form, as that is believed to weaken the altavar's prison.[9]

However, not all oni believe the teachings of the Path of Inspiration, and so all oni are closely monitored by the Thousand Eyes for signs of dissent or attempts to develop their magical abilities.[7] Some oni dissent by joining the Heirs of Ohr Kaluun, seeking to develop their magical abilities in the hopes of becoming stronger than the Inspired. Other oni join the Horned Shadow, a secret organization of oni, ogres, and eneko seeking freedom for ogrekind.[10]
