  • Is there anything specific I can help with around the wiki? I don't have all the books, but if there are topics that need adding to, I'll do my best.

    • Hi!

From my perspective, just about everything. :) There's a lot that needs to be cleaned up, standardised, organised, and updated. I try to clean up a page or two each day as I come across them. There's also a lot of lore that needs to be added, which I try whenever I have time for a project between my work at the Forgotten Realms Wiki, as well as new and revise templates I import.

For things that specifically need to be done, there's finding and removing any more plagiarism and crunch (specific rules information) and adding references, as you've been doing. They're the most important.

BTW, you don't have to add [[Category:Sourceless]] to pages. Instead, add {{Unreferenced}} to the top of the page. That will give it a noticeable tag and put it in Category:Articles lacking sources.

  • Hey question, i Updated some of the Xen'drik pages with extra information from the book of Secrets of Xen'drik. And i see now that i did that work for absolutly nothing as you just removed all of it.

    May i ask why?

    • As I said in the edit summaries, I removed the text because you copied it directly from the sourcebooks. This is copyright infringement, which is obviously illegal. I retained the non-copied text on Dar Qat before fixing up the article, and have left Alask d'Jorasco, which isn't copied, but needs work to put it in wiki style. If you wish to add to the wiki, please rewrite the information in your own words.

  • Hello again. I couldn't help but notice that you've been removing mentions of characters being from novels as a way of making entries be more focused on the in-universe aspect of the page. While I can understand doing that for other wikis like the Forgotten Realms, in Eberron novels aren't canon to the setting the same way Forgotten Realms novels are (same with video games and other media). This allows the authors a bit more creative freedom in what they can do, because if they write in something that changes the status quo, without it invalidating previous sourcebooks or changing people's campaigns.

I personally liked the approach of mentioning that characters were from a novel at the start of the article, but I can definitely understand wishing to remove it. Do you have any ideas of ways to make it more clear that a character is solely from an Eberron novel and not a sourcebook? Perhaps some sort of Novel character template under Appearances would work?

    • No problem. I'll work on tagging the pages over coming days.

  • Hey BadCatMan, I'm new to the Eberron wiki. Is there anything I should know as far as style and what's expected? Also, I made a page last night, but I wasn't able to figure out how to put links in an infobox. How do I do that?

    Thanks!

    • Welcome to the wiki! It's under new management at the moment, we're still cleaning and updating a lot of things, and not a lot of style is set in stone. But what I would encourage is close to what you had at Krozen. I made some changes there to fix some bugs and add some code, which you can see here. I used the complete {{Character}} infobox and a citation template and added some categories. Links should usually go in an infobox the same as normal, so that might be a problem with your editor.

First, I strongly recommend using the Source Editor, not the Visual Editor. The VE wrecks pages and doesn't work with templates, while the SE shows you the wiki code, which is easy to pick up. You can select your editor from the drop-down menu or set it in Preferences. The SE is probably why you couldn't add links.

I renamed the article to just "Krozen" because I didn't think it necessary to have his "High Cardinal" title in the article name; this way, he can be linked to as just "Krozen" and be easily categorised under K.

At File:Highcardinalkrozen.jpg, I also added the new {{ImageInformation}} template, filled out details, added categories, and replaced the image because the one from the WotC site was a little clearer.

Otherwise, poke around, see how things work, watch what I and User:Perses13 do, and if you have a good idea, try it out. — BadCatMan (talk) 05:57, May 20, 2020 (UTC)

  • Just noticed you removed a bunch of user contributions from Miscellaneous Resources without changing the heading description. Is there any plans to put that information on a user page as well? Also is Miscellaneous Resources even a neccessary page now? Our only link to it currently is the old Intro page, which you can only find through the Community Portal.

    • I just wanted to remove a bunch of ancient links and cruft, and the page seemed focused on canon sources, rather than the fanon material. I probably should've put more thought into it, but all the redirect deletions and page moves is probably driving me mad, TBH. Anyway, I don't want to get into EW policy (else I'd prefer to delete the User Contributions out of hand) and communicating with the readership, so feel free to handle that however you like.

    • That was definitely the right step to take, I'm just checking if we want to do anything further with it since the page only has one place linking to it.

        Loading editor
    • At this stage, I just wanted to gather all the wiki resources into one place, at, so others can see how it should go together.

  • Just checking, is there a reason the geriviar image you uploaded didn't seem to have many categories? Just checking since you seemed to be fine with adding them on the FRW.

      Loading editor
    • AFAICT, the Eberron Wiki doesn't have a set organisation for categories and there isn't a community to settle one. The image categories don't have to be excessive: there is only one image of a geriviar in existence, so a category for them alone is redundant.

In any case, I thought I added some categories, but I guess it didn't take.

  • Hey, out of curiosity, have you any idea who set up the image adding page on the Forgotten Realms wiki? I'm just asking in case they could try doing the same thing here.

      Loading editor
    • In the current form, it was mostly developed by Moviesign from earlier templates. At the FRW, it can be found at MediaWiki:Uploadtext and Template:Information.

Something similar would need to be created here at the EW at MediaWiki:Uploadtext, but simply copying it over isn't easy, because of the themes and linked templates the FRW uses. It may need an admin to import things. I've asked Moviesign about it.

  • I am considering making pages for the various grafts listed in Magic of Eberron, but I had a question:

How should they be separated out? Should there be separate pages for "Deathless," "Elemental," and "Plant" grafts?" should there be pages for each individual graft in each of those types? Should it all be in one page about Grafts? Should these be in categories and subcategories (Grafts, then a different category within that for each of the three)?

      Loading editor
    • For best wiki development, I'd say each individual graft should get it's own page, then link back to the type of graft or to grafts in general, and they would also be in graft categories and subcategories. That way, one article page can focus on the graft in question, who has them, images and details. For example, bone plating would link back to deathless grafts and grafts, and deathless grafts would link back to grafts, and each would be categorised similarly. That's an approach that works for us at the Forgotten Realms Wiki, anyway.
