The King's Citadel is an elite military and intelligence agency in the service of King Boranel ir'Wynarn of Breland. The organization serves a number of purposes for the Brelish crown, including law enforcement, espionage, protection of the royal family, and special-forces military operations.[1][3] Local law enforcement calls upon the King's Citadel to dispense the king's justice when a case is too big for them to handle, especially if the case concerns espionage or national security.[3]

Organization[]

The King's Citadel is divided into five branches, each of which answer to Lord Kor ir'Wynarn, brother to King Boranel.[1][2]

The King's Swords[]

The King's Swords are elite soldiers who take on dangerous combat missions in conjunction with the Brelish military. They are led by Captain Ellanar.[1][2][3][4]

The King's Shields[]

The King's Shields are charged with ensuring the personal security of members of the royal family, including the king himself, as well as other Brelish dignitaries. They are led by Captain Sortan.[1][2][3][4]

The King's Wands[]

The King's Wands provide magical support for the other branches of the Citadel and the Brelish military. They are led by Captain Nebik.[1][2][3][4]

The King's Dark Lanterns[]

The Dark Lanterns are the intelligence branch and considered the most skilled of Khorvaire's intelligence agencies.[5] Led by Captain Vron, the Dark Lanterns have about 500 agents operating within Breland's borders and another 100 or so agents operating abroad. Their activities are highly secretive, but their mission is to conduct espionage on nations across the globe while protecting Breland's own national secrets. Agents often work in teams to accomplish their missions, and they have the authority to eliminate anyone or anything that threatens the Brelish people or crown.[2][6] Once inducted into the Dark Lanterns, an agent is expected to serve until their death—while an agent may retire, the crown can recall them at any time.[6]

Beneath Captain Vron are four knight marshals, leading branch offices in Sharn, Starilaskur, Xandrar, and even one in Stormreach.[2][6]

The King's Shadows[]

The King's Shadows are an extra-secretive division of the King's Citadel, only used for missions that must be kept as far from the government as possible. They are led by Captain Terra. Only the most seasoned, trusted, and elite agents are given the chance to join the Shadows.[1][4]

Base of Operations[]

The King's Citadel is headquartered at the Citadel, a large obsidian tower on the central island of Wroat, Breland's capital. From there, Kor ir'Wynarn and his branch captains oversee Citadel operations.[3][4] In addition the King's Citadel has smaller branch offices across Breland, most notable of these being the one in the Ambassador Towers district in Sharn.[3][7]

History[]

Kingdom of Galifar[]

The King's Citadel was originally the intelligence service of the kings of Galifar, prior to the Last War.[8]

The Last War[]

The modern incarnation of the King's Citadel was founded during the Last War. Initially envisioned to serve as spies and scouts, the organization's role expanded over time to become the Brelish crown's premier military and law enforcement agency.[1][3]

Umbral spies were initially created by the King's Citadel early in the war, however this feat was quickly replicated by other nations.[9]

When Thranish negotiators were murdered during negotiations over the Treaty of Thronehold, it was a King's Citadel agent, along with a Silver Flame paladin, who unveiled the perpetrators, allowing negotiations to continue.[10]
