The Glowing Chasm is a mysterious great crevasse in the northern parts of the Mournland.[2][3][4] It is also known as the Great Chasm.[1]

Description[]

This vast crack in the earth emits a cold purple or violet light that seems to come from impossibly deep underground. Its source is unknown and cannot be seen from the top, and no one who has gone to investigate has been seen alive again.[2][3][4] This light can be seen from miles away.[3]

Inhabitants[]

It seems to be a common gathering spot for the mutated horrors that prowl the Mournland.[2][3][4] It is theorized the purple light played a part in creating them. While this is unconfirmed, it is certain that it affects them,[2] as those monsters that frequent the Glowing Chasm grow even more foul and corrupted than before.[2][3][4] Prince Oargev ir'Wynarn of New Cyre is an expert on these mutant creatures.[1]

The mutated dragon Haze-of-Death clawed his way out of the chasm after the Day of Mourning, and still lairs near the chasm. His companion Drugor has also been mutated.[5]

Notable Locations[]

Close to the chasm, in a secret location, is a tower holding tomes of powerful magic. Oargev possesses a map to this installation and will hire adventurers to retrieve the tomes for him.[6]

Rumors[]

It is rumored that one of Cyre's warforged colossi lies at the bottom of the Glowing Chasm. Namely, it is Colossus WX-11, "Arkus", with one arm missing.[7]

The chasm is believed to be one of the places where the Mourning first appeared, and where the truth of it might be found.[3]

A wizard based in Sharn is investigating the Glowing Chasm and believes he can uncover its secret and even reverse its mutation, but he wants three of Haze-of-Death's scales to create his cure.[5]

Notes[]

Strangely, artwork of the Glowing Chasm appears in the online art gallery for Five Nations, but the chasm barely mentioned in the actual book, and even then under the incorrect name "Great Chasm", suggesting it was removed prior to publication.
