Equinals are large, horse-like guardinals[2][1] native to the plane of Lamannia, the Twilight Forest. [3][4]

They are one of the more common varieties of guardinals and enthusiastically fight evil, typically by pounding it to pulp with their hoof-like fists.[2]

Description[]

Equinals are massive humanoid creatures with several of the features of a draft horse, including a horse-like head and long face; a crest or mane of long, wild hair that runs from their head to halfway down their back; long unguligrade legs ending in hooves and clad in short, bristly hair; and hands with thick nails as hard as iron that form hooves when closed into a fist.[2][1] They have highly muscular builds, with barrel chests, powerful shoulders, and long arms and stand 8 feet (2.4 meters) tall while weighing in at at least 600 pounds (270 kilograms).[2]

Personality[]

Champions of goodness and especially of giving evil a good thumping, equinals are generally benevolent, brave, tenacious, and boisterous.[2][1] They throw themselves enthusiastically into any cause if it means a chance to go toe-to-hoof against beings of evil and knock them out.[2] They brag of their physical abilities and will gladly prove it in challenges and competitions. An equinal will hardly ever back down if challenged.[1]

Abilities[]

The physically strongest of guardinals,[1] equinals are famed for their incredible strength.[2] Their legsare equally powerful, enabling them to run far and fast.[1]

An equinal can also emit a powerful whinny–no mere neigh or whicker, this is an ear-piercing shriek that can leave those who hear it up to 20 feet (6.1 meters) away stunned or deafened for up to half a minute.[2][1] This can affect all non-guardinals and can be done once an hour.[2]

They possess an array of magical powers, being able to command others, conjure a fog cloud, produce light, launch magic missiles, slow their foes, and create a wall of stone. Like other guardinals, they can also aid others, detect evil to a distance of 100 feet (30 meters), see invisible things, teleport short distances, dispel magic, and create an aura to protect against evil (centered upon themselves to 10 feet (3 meters).[2]

With a form of telepathy, guardinals can communicate with any intelligent, language-using creature as with tongues and with any beast as with speak with animals, and can do so without the need to speak aloud.[2]

Like a paladin, an equinal can also lay on hooves to heal others.[2]

They can only be harmed by weapons made of silver or which were evil. In turn, their hooves and weapons are weapons of good that can overcome the resistances of fiends.[2]

As guardinals, they enjoy an array of other protections, including immunities to electricity and petrification and resistances to acid, cold, and poison and against spells.[2] They are immune to being charmed or magically frightened and they are resistant to radiant energy.[1]

Combat[]

When it comes to battle, equinals scorn weaponry and favor their own iron-hard, hoof-like fists, and charge into the fray. They can bowl foes over and smash an enemy's weapon or armor.[2][1] An equinal will never stand down, surrender, or flee a fight, no matter how outnumbered or outclassed they are.[2]

Society[]

Equinals live in bands of up to twelve members.[2]

Among the guardinals, equinals are the most common, together with cervidals.[2]

They usually communicate in Celestial and Common.[2][1]

Usage[]

An equinal may be summoned with summon monster VI.[5]
