Eilian the Old is a resident of Winterhaven in Karrnath and secretly an agent of King Kaius III, who was sent to Winterhaven for an act of cowardice during the Last War.[1]
History[]
Eilian served Karrnath during the Last War, acting as both a solider and spy, but at some point performed a minor act of cowardice that led him to be sent to Winterhaven as a punishment. The town's residents were not made aware of his former allegiances, and so he continued to act as a secret agent for his king in the town. He stayed in this village for many years, getting to know the village's inhabitants—including the elf flower merchant Delphina Moongem—very well.[1]
Around the time of the first Winterhaunt after the Last War, Eilian discovered some strange happenings in the village and so sent a message to another of the king's agents, Douven Staul, causing him to come to Winterhaven. Eilian had hopes that, should he be able to find favor with his king, he would be able to replace the land's inept lord, Padraig.[1]
Douven arrived in the village and liaised with Eilian, but never fully took him into his confidence. Nevertheless, Douven reported that he believed there was a cult of goblins and kobolds worshiping a demon, though they were being organized by a new master. Eilian believed that this group may be some kind of death cult, sacrificing people in the name of the Blood of Vol. This proved to be only partially true as Ironteeth had recently taken control of the local kobold tribe and they were part of a Cult of the Dragon Below that worshiped Orcus.[1]
Eilian continued to act as Douven's contact in the village, with Douven reporting that he had discovered a dig site nearby that was uncovering the skeletal remains of a dragon, telling Eilian that the "third sinister rib" was important in some way. This was the last contact that Eilian had with Douven, and so Eilian continued to monitor the situation until a new group of adventurers appeared in Winterhaven. While he was waiting, an agent of Kaius contact one such group in a Karrnathi city, telling them to go to Winterhaven and look for an old man in Wrafton's Inn, giving them coded instructions that Eilian was aware of to identify themselves.[1]
When this group appeared in Winterhaven, on the very cusp of Winterhaunt, Eilian provide them with all the information he knew about Douven. He also advised them that Delphina had been acting in a strange manner as of late, though he did not know she had in fact been killed and replaced by the changeling Sil. He directed this group towards the dig site, the last known location of Douven, and asked that they report back to him.[1]
