Durastoran the Wyrmbreaker is a powerful rakshasa who sits on the Bleak Council of the Lords of Dust. He is the prakhutu (chosen speaker) of the Overlord known as the Shadow in the Flame, Bel Shalor.[1][2][4][3]

Description[]

Durastoran the Wyrmbreaker is an ak'chazar rakshasa, a powerful tiger-headed fiend with backwards hands and the coloration of a white tiger.[5]

Personality[]

Durastoran has an all-consuming hatred for the dragons of Argonnessen and an insatiable hunger for revenge against them.[1][2]

Activities[]

He seeks to free his shadowy master from within his prison in the Silver Flame.[2][3]

Durastoran is an active agent in the Lords of Dust's secret war against the Chamber[1][4][2] and takes pleasure in playing lethal games with them and their agents.[2] He has spent much of his immortal life studying the Draconic Prophecy in order to corrupt it whenever he has the opportunity and twist specific predicted events against the dragons,[1] and guide the world into an age of darkness.[2]

He enjoys encouraging conflict between the dragons and the elves by manipulating affairs in Aerenal.[1][2][4]

Relationships[]

He is said to have an army of lesser fiends and human minions all over Khorvaire at his disposal.[2]

History[]

Durastoran the Wyrmbreaker has been engaged in an active campaign against his hated foes, the dragons, since the Age of Demons.[1][4]

According to Durastoran himself, he triggered the first war between the dragons of Argonnessen and the elves of Aerenal. He has also foiled many of the Chamber's plans.[2]

Abilities[]

Durastoran the Wyrmbreaker is a master of magic and knows countless rituals. He is deeply knowledgeable about the Draconic Prophecy as it relates to his master.[1][2] His gift for prophecy enables him to predict the actions of others, even in battle.[2]

He has all the abilities of the powerful ak'chazar rakshasa,[5] as well as those of a loremaster and fatespinner.[4] He has a talent for deception.[2]

Tactics[]

Durastoran would rather have others fight his battles for him, and only took a claw in a conflict directly if it aided him in a larger plot. To create conflict between two parties, he might magically disguise himself as one and attack then other, then appear to lose and get away. With his magic, he could lure and trick people into attacking their allies and assail them with frightful phantoms and visions.[2]

Appendix[]

Background[]

Durastoran's patron is first identified by name and title as Bel Shalor, the Shadow in the Flame, in the 4th-edition Eberron Campaign Guide.[2]

Keith Baker suggested on his website that specialized circumstances may be needed to hinder a powerful immortal such as Durastoran for more than a few days.[6]

"If a Lord of Dust was killed, would the death be for good (akin to killing a demon in the Abyss) or would it reform somewhere? In Eberron, immortal spirits cannot be destroyed. Unless they are bound, they will always reform. This is true of every immortal from rakshasa to devils to quori. Depending on the type of immortal, it may not retain its memories after death and reincarnation. This is true of quori, and it's why the Dreaming Dark seeks to exterminate the Kalashtar quori – so they can be reintegrated and reborn as part of il-Lashtavar. With rakshasa, weaker ones generally lose memories, while strong ones (such as the Council of Ashtakala) will generally reform with memories intact. Now, there are ways to ensure that you destroy the memories, and ways to delay that reincarnation, and the key there is to know your Prophecy. Kill the Wyrmbreaker with normal steel on a Tuesday and he'll be back by Thursday. But if the Son of Seven Sorrows kills him with a silver sword forged in the tears of the Keeper under the light of a new moon, he might be dead for a year and a day. Which is to say, a DM should always feel free to come up with interesting circumstances under which it is possible to effectively kill a fiend."
