Docents are sentient magical items that can be embedded into the chest of a warforged. They have only been found in the ruins of Xen'drik, and the ability to craft them has yet to be replicated by the artificers of Khorvaire.[1][2]

Description[]

Docents resemble a small metal sphere approximately 2 inches (5.1 centimeters) in diameter. The surface of the sphere is studded with dragonshards.[1][2]

While they are generally embedded in the chest of a warforged, they can also be embedded elsewhere, such as an eye socket.[2]

Powers[]

A docent only activates when it is attached to a warforged. Docents have a variety of abilities, but they are most commonly used as translators. The docent can communicate telepathically with its warforged host, and even speak using the warforged's voice. All docents can speak Common and Giant, and they can quickly learn several other languages as well.[1][2]

Docents have a number of different abilities as well as their ability to pick up languages, but these vary depending on the docent in question. Some docents are skilled at recalling information, while others can assist their warforged host in spotting creatures, using the warforged's senses. Other docents have the ability to cast spells to assist their warforged host, such as detect magic, detect undead, or haste.[1][2]

History[]

Docents are all tens of thousands of years old. They are one of several powerful warforged components discovered in the giant ruins of Xen'drik, suggesting that giants had their own versions of warforged during the Age of Giants.[3][4]

Finding docents and other warforged components is a top priority of the House Cannith enclave in Stormreach, at the direction of Merrix d'Cannith.[5] However, other factions in Stormreach also seek docents, such as the Iron Watch.[6]

When House Cannith built the warforged colossi for Cyre, they used a network of docent nodes to operate the massive constructs. While modeled off the docents found in Xen'drik, these docent nodes lack the sentience or capabilities of the original docents, only functioning together in a network operated by a central true docent. With the loss of the warforged colossi in the Day of Mourning, House Cannith sometimes hires salvage parties to enter the Mournland to recover docents and other components.[7]
