The Deathguard are a religious order dedicated to combating evil undead and those who would create them. The order is based out of Shae Cairdal in Aerenal and is exclusively composed of elf priests and warriors.[1][2][3][4]

Organization[]

The Deathguard are led by High Warden Cial Jhaelian, an undying councilor. Beneath him are four Wardens who are each responsible for Deathguard operations in one of Argonnessen, Khorvaire, Sarlona, or Xen'drik. With the exception of the Warden of Argonnessen, who is based out of Aerenal, each Warden is based on their continent.[1]

Activities[]

The Deathguard view fighting evil undead and the necromancers who create them as part of a great crusade against darkness. Members of the Deathguard on Aerenal hunt for signs of undead or necromantic activity in Mabaran manifest zones that dot the island. However, many members of the Deathguard are dispersed far and wide across the other continents of Eberron to hunt down and do battle with undead.[1]

History[]

The Deathguard were founded in order to destroy the Vol family and its necromantic practices. They view the existence of the Blood of Vol as a sign of failure.[1][2]

Bases[]

They have their headquarters in Shae Mordai,[1] but the first base of operations they constructed is the Temple of the Deathguard, a pyramid-temple in Shae Cairdal.[2]

Members[]

Most of the Deathguard's 400 or so members are Aereni elves, with a small minority being urban elves from Khorvaire.[1] Many of the Deathguard are from the Jhaelian family, whose skull tattoos and artificially decomposed flesh give the appearance of undeath.[3]

Notable Members[]

  • Cial Jhaelian: An undying councilor and High Warden of the Deathguard based in Shae Mordai. In life, Cial fought against the Line of Vol some 2,600 years ago, and now leads the Deathguard following his death. Possessing a gentle demeanor, he pities the undead.[1]
  • Caskal Dulaen: A Cyran elf, Caskal fought Karrnathi undead during the Last War. He is a cleric of the Undying Court. As an urban elf from Khorvaire, Caskal strives to go above and beyond to prove himself.[1]
  • Marai Jhaelian: Marai is a grim warrior paladin and hunter of the dead. She appears undead due to ritual disfigurement with alchemical treatments despite being in her prime.[1]
