Darkwood is a rare kind of magic wood with special properties.

Description[]

Darkwood is a rare magic wood with applications in armor, weapons, magic items, and building construction.[1]

Darkwood is among the many woods of Aerenal.[2] These woods are considered an important commodity.[3]

Properties[]

Darkwood is as hard as normal wood but much lighter,[1] and it is conducive to magical application.[4] Any item consisting of pure wood or mostly wood is considered masterwork and weighs half as much as a normal wood version of the item.[1]

Uses[]

Crafters can carefully cure and carve pieces of darkwood along with alchemically treated leaves from the darkwood tree to create armor out of darkleaf.[5]

Some druids in the Eldeen Reaches—specifically, the Wardens of the Wood and the Gatekeepers—have created a darkwood flesh graft using the heart of a living darkwood tree. The graft strengthens the flesh with darkwood and allows for the recipient to heal themselves.[6]

The woodshaper Tanar Mendyrian in Sharn is known for his darkwood bows, and for producing leafweave, darkleaf, and bronzewood armor.[2]

The elves of the Bloodsail Principality construct ship's hulls out of darkwood.[7]

Cost[]

Items made from darkwood cost 10 gp more per pound than the masterwork version of that same item.[1]

Lands[]

Darkwood groves exist in the Eldeen Reaches, though the druids discourage harvesting of it and other rare plants from the woods.[8]

Darkwood trees exist in the southern Eldeen Reaches, and smugglers send them across Silver Lake in Aundairian wine crates by barge. The Wardens of the Wood seek to punish poachers who harvest darkwood trees in the Eldeen Reaches.[9]

The Qabalrin elves of the Ring of Storms in Xen'drik constructed cities out of darkwood. black marble, and glass. The structures on the surface were shattered by the fall of the Heart of Siberys, though some survive underground.[10]

Shaeras Vadallia was crowned High King of Valenar with a darkwood crown.[11] His palace in Taer Valaestas is known as the Darkwood Palace.[12]

Darkwood trees are found in Farlnen in the Lhazaar Principalities. The Bloodsail elves build cities out of basalt and darkwood.[7]

The village of Blackroot in the Shadow Marches is named after the darkwood trees of the region, and the roots that rise up from the soil.[13]
