A cinder swarm is a swarm of countless tiny fire elementals, called cinders, gathered into a unified destructive force.[1]

Description

While just one of the fire elementals is no greater than a bit of hot ash bursting from a campfire, the cinder swarm is a cohesive mass of crackling, flickering, sparking flames some 10 feet (3 meters) wide.[1]

Combat

When a cinder swarm attacks, it is with the combined physical force of the many elementals that make it up and the burning heat of their flaming bodies. However, such was their size, a target had to be very close to or even among the swarm. Naturally, striking with a fist of other body part meant the attacker was assaulted in turn.[1]

At first, a cinder swarm will simply attack the closest creature, but afterward it will turn on those who show they can hurt it, particularly with powers of cold to which they are vulnerable. They will also fly after those who are in the air.[1]

Abilities

Anything or anyone a cinder swarm touches is burned and even risks being set alight. The flames last for up to almost half a minute, or until they can put it out.[1]

Such is the chaos of being caught within a swarm, a living being inside a cinder swarm who cannot keep their focus becomes terribly distracted. It is difficult for them to act effectively or concentrate on spellcasting or other activities that take concentration or patience.[1]

Behavior

Although individual elementals tend to be neutral, when all together the cinder swarms are forces of evil. They exult in causing devastation and hurting others.[1]

While each fire elemental speaks Ignan, it is nigh-impossible to communicate with just one in a cinder swarm, let alone the entire group. Lone voices are engulfed by the roar of them all.[1]

Society

Cinder swarms can be encountered alone, in "flames" of up to four swarms, and "blazes" of up to eight.[1]

Homelands

Cinder swarms are native to Fernia, the Sea of Fire.[1][2] When the two planes are coterminous, they often come to Eberron.[1]
