A barghest is a kind of evil shapechanging fiend found in the plane of Mabar, the Endless Night.[6]
Description[]
Barghests superficially resemble lupine goblinoids They can change shape into a goblinoid creature.[4]
In its normal form, it resembles a goblin–wolf hybrid with monstrous jaws and razor-sharp claws. A full-grown barghest is about 6 feet (1.8 meters) long and weighs 180 pounds (82 kilograms). A barghest's eyes glow orange when the creature becomes excited.[4]
Greater barghests, those barghests that have fed on enough corpses, grow to greater size and power, can change into a goblinoid creature that is about 8 feet (2.4 meters) tall and weighing around 400 pounds (180 kilograms), and a dire wolf.[4]
If slain, a barghest reverts to its true, fiendish form.[1]
Abilities[]
While they have a variety of magical powers, barghests are feared for their ability to consume those they slay and absorb their powers. Young barghests cannot attain standing in their society until they have slain and consumed a number of great mortal heroes. Eventually, these monsters shed their skin and transform into a greater barghest.[4] Barghests can consume the souls of humanoids and fey they kill if they consume the body within 10 minutes of death.[1]
All barghests can transform between a goblinoid and lupine form. In wolf form, they can pass without a trace at will,[4] and they can also do so regardless of form.[1]
Barghests can cast several spells such as blink, levitate, misdirection, and rage at will. They can also cast the charm monster, crushing despair, and dimension door spell-like abilities once pear day.[4]
Greater barghests can additionally cast the invisibility sphere spell will, and the mass bull's strength and mass enlarge spells once per day each.[4]
Activities[]
Barghests cross over to the Material Plane to hunt and feed on mortals whenever Mabar becomes coterminous with Eberron.[6]
