The Banking Guild is a guild that is a part of House Kundarak.[1][2][3][4][5] It's one of various banking guilds managed by House Kundarak[6] and is seen as the house's public face.[2][5]
Organization[]
The guild is managed by Baron Morrikan d'Kundarak, leader of House Kundarak, from his base in Kundarakhold in the Mror Holds.[1] Members tend to be aristocrats, experts, and warriors.[2] Gnomes of House Sivis living in the Mror Holds work as notaries and stonesenders in the guild as well.[7]
Relations[]
The bank only takes major clients: other guilds and other dragonmarked houses, big organizations, and royalty.[1] It works hand-in-hand with House Sivis in accounting and with House Cannith guilds and others to set fair standards and ensure stable prices for basic products and services.[3][2]
Activities[]
The guild supplies letters of credit, offers and endorses loans, exchanges currencies (such as to more transportable forms like gems or bills of exchange), and makes available secure vaults for holding riches.[1][2][4] The interest charged on loans—typically 10% per annum plus collateral[2]—makes up a significant proportion of Kundarak's income.[3] It also oversees major banking and finance,[2] regulates commerce in loans and currency exchange, as well as gem-cutting and jewelry making, and advises governments on standards for coinage (though critics describe it as dictating).[3] It also provides training and supplies licenses to all those who work with money and valuables: bankers, lenders, money-changers, treasurers, and coin-minters, and gem-cutters, goldsmiths, and jewelers, and more.[2][5]
The Banking Guild also provides a safe-deposit vault service that allows clients and those they nominate to deposit and retrieve items from any Kundarak bank. The vaults are magically linked to each other, allowing customers to access their items no matter where they first deposited it.[1][3][5] A magical word given to the client grants access to the vault. Rental of such a vault costs 10 gp per day, and members of House Kundarak receive a discount. Objects are limited to no more than 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms). It is quite a popular service, at least among those able to afford it.[1] Similarly, as the major offices are magically linked, a client can deposit and withdraw their funds at any of them.[1] Thus, the Banking Guild keeps safe some of the greatest treasures of Khorvaire.[2]
Area of Operations[]
Kundarak banks are run by the Banking Guild and its establishments can be found in cities across the former Five Nations, in Aundair, Breland, Thrane, Karrnath; in eastern Khorvaire in Zilargo and to a minor degree the Lhazaar Principalities,[1][3] and even in Stormreach in Xen'drik.[3] These banks are protected by wards and house guards[3] and are famed for their security.[5]
History[]
The dwarves of House Kundarak used the mining wealth of the Mror Holds to establish their system of banking all over Khorvaire.[5]
